Mentoring Program I

This introductory program is designed to introduce you to our philosophy of managing chronic pain and the practices of meditation, mindfulness and journaling that we use to do so.

During week one, you will receive information that provides an overview of the program content, time line and structure. We will ask you to spend some time thinking about the reasons that you wish to participate in our mentoring series and write a short statement of commitment in your journal. This is, of course, merely a formality, but many people find it helpful to have a record of their feelings before the program to which they can refer when it is completed.

You will also receive a template designed to help you develop one or two specific goals related to your pain and its affect on your life. These goals will be your focus while you participate in the mentoring programs.  They can be anything at all, from learning to accept the need to use an assistive device to help with mobility to finding a way to deal with feelings of guilt, anger, or shame associated with your diagnosis or disability. Your mentor will be available during this time to help you choose appropriate goals.

Over the next four weeks, you will work closely with your mentor to develop your journaling practice and begin using it as a means of defining specific problems and gaining insight into potential solutions. Communication between you and your mentor will be managed  using the free online program- "Google apps" rather than through e-mail to allow for a more fluid interaction. You mentor will also be available at designated times for an online chat to discuss any ongoing issues or concerns.

During these four weeks you will also be introduced to the practice of "mindfulness meditation", and complete a number of exercises which will help you to develop a more comprehensive awareness of your external surroundings as well as your personal mental "landscape" of thoughts, opinions, feelings, self-talk, motivation and defenses.

The final week of the program-week 5-as in all of our programs is reserved as an intensive period of reflection during which you will continue your journaling practice with an emphasis on consolidating the insights you have gained over the previous four weeks. You will use these insights as a starting point  for  Program II, which is designed to focus attention on the link between your subconscious mind, your thoughts and actions, and your state of physical and emotional health.
